Your Mind Follows Direction

Here is a tiny NLP-ish thing that becomes very useful once you notice it. Your mind tends to follow direction. That sounds obvious until you pay attention to the directions people accidentally give themselves. “Don’t mess this up.” “Don’t forget.” “Don’t look nervous.” “Don’t think about chocolate.” “Don’t be awkward.” The problem is, the mind still has to represent the thing you told it not to do. If I say, “Don’t think about a purple elephant wearing sunglasses,” your mind probably did something with that. Maybe only for half a second. But it still had to process the idea. So instead of only telling your mind what not to do, give it a direction. Instead of: “Don’t mess this up.” try: “Focus on the first useful step.” Instead of: “Don’t look nervous.” try: “Slow down and speak clearly.” Instead of: “Don’t forget.” try: “Remember the three main points.” This is not about perfect wording. It is about giving your mind somewhere useful to go. Tiny experiment: Notice one “don’t” instruction you give yourself this week. Then turn it into a direction. Not: “Don’t do that.” But: “Do this instead.”
