Hypnosis Uses Imagination More Than Force

A lot of people think hypnosis is about forcing the mind to do something. That is not how I think about it. A better way to look at hypnosis is this: Hypnosis uses attention, imagination, suggestion, and response. Not force. Imagination is a big part of it. And imagination does not mean “pretending something is true and hoping for the best.” It means the mind can rehearse, explore, and respond to an idea before it becomes real behavior. Athletes use imagination. Actors use imagination. Musicians use imagination. People who worry use imagination too, they just usually use it to rehearse the worst possible version of the future. Very creative. Not always helpful. Try this: Think of something small you are about to do. A conversation. A task. A decision. A simple next step. Now imagine yourself doing the first part of it calmly enough. Not perfectly. Just calmly enough. Notice how you start. Notice your posture. Notice your breathing. Notice the first thing you do. That is imagination being used as rehearsal. And rehearsal is one of the ways the mind learns.
